Enhanced Grain Limed Oak Decking at a Modern Cornish Home

The Brief

Perched on the North Cornwall coast with sweeping views out to sea, this contemporary new build has everything going for it: light-filled interiors, generous outdoor space, and a dramatic natural backdrop. What it needed was a decking solution that could hold its own against one of the UK’s most demanding coastal environments while doing justice to the quality of the build.

Indoor-outdoor coastal living

For homeowners Paul and Emma, this wasn’t a decorative afterthought. The outdoor space was central to how they wanted to live in the home, and the decking would need to perform as well as it looked. Salt-laden air, persistent moisture, strong winds and unpredictable weather all ruled out traditional timber. It had to be something built to last.

They chose Millboard Enhanced Grain Decking in Limed Oak, supplied through Cladco, one of our Platinum Distributors. Installation was carried out by Dale Chadwick Carpentry & Construction.

Enhanced Grain Limed Oak

Designed for the Coastal Environment

Coastal properties can place exceptional demands on exterior materials. Timber, however well maintained, can be vulnerable to the combination of salt air, moisture and UV exposure found at the Cornish coast, and the ongoing upkeep required can quickly become a burden.

Paul and Emma were clear about what they wanted: the warmth and character of real oak, without the seasonal maintenance routine. “We wanted something that looked like real oak but wouldn’t need constant staining or sanding, especially with the sea air here,” they explained.

Enhanced Grain Decking in Limed Oak was the natural answer. Every board in the Enhanced Grain range is hand-moulded from real timber originals and hand-coloured, capturing the authentic grain character and tonal variation of natural wood. The result is a surface that reads as genuinely organic rather than manufactured, something that matters when the product sits within a landscape as strong and considered as this one.

The boards have a Lastane surface layer which provides exceptional resistance to fading, swelling, rot and salt ingress. No oiling. No sanding. No seasonal treatment. Just a surface that continues to look and perform as intended, year after year.

A Considered Design Approach

The installation was completed by Dale Chadwick Carpentry & Construction, whose precision and attention to detail are clear to see throughout the finished project.

Each board was laid to follow the natural flow of the garden design, creating a clean, contemporary look that connects the various levels of outdoor space without visual interruption. The choice of Limed Oak, with its soft, sun-washed tone, was deliberate. The colour sits comfortably within the surrounding palette of natural stone, render and glass, anchoring the deck within the landscape rather than competing with it.

One of the primary design goals was to achieve a seamless transition between interior and exterior. By closely matching the decking tone to the home’s internal flooring, the flow through the large bifold doors onto the terrace feels uninterrupted. Inside and outside become a single, coherent space, particularly effective given the views the property commands.

Finishing details have been handled with equal care. Matching fascia boards, bullnose edge profiles and concealed fixings give the deck a refined, seamless appearance at every level. There are no exposed fixings or raw edges to undermine the overall quality of the result.

Lighting and Year-Round Use

Subtle warm LED perimeter lighting installed beneath the bullnose edge is a quietly effective addition. It adds visibility and definition after dark while lending the space a different quality in the evenings, allowing the deck to function as a space to be enjoyed well beyond daylight hours.

Practical performance was equally important. The exceptionally slip-resistant surface of Enhanced Grain Decking provides reliable traction in wet conditions, which matters on a property regularly exposed to sea air, moisture, and rain. Cleaning is straightforward: soapy water is sufficient to keep the boards looking fresh, with no specialist products or annual maintenance schedule required.

The outcome is a space that works as well in January as it does in July. Exposed to the full range of Cornish weather, the deck performs without compromise across every season.

The Completed Space

The finished project demonstrates what is possible when material choice, considered design and skilled installation come together. What could have been a functional afterthought has become one of the most compelling features of the property: a terrace that frames the coastal view, extends the living space and operates without the maintenance demands that traditional timber could have imposed.

The integration of a hot tub, entertaining area, garden steps and a multi-level layout across the site shows the versatility of Enhanced Grain Decking in a complex, real-world residential application. Every level has been created with the same quality and consistency.
